Eating Organic Food On A Budget

Eating nutritious whole foods helps you to access energy you may not have felt in years. With every bite you’re promoting health, eating these higher quality sources of food for your body.
One of the main road blocks to eating organic food is of course the expense!
I’ve learnt some very practical ways to cut costs & time when it comes to choosing these clean foods for my family & I’d love to share these with you.


1. One Step In The Right Direction Is Better Than No Step At All.
If your budget really won’t permit you to buy EVERYTHING organic then there are some beneficial options for you! You have some choices & you can become well informed to prioritise which foods are most important to buy organically & which you are least likely to spend too much money on. Thanks to the “Environmental Working Group” we as the consumers can make some very educated decisions when it comes to purchasing fresh fruit & vegetables. Each year make yourself familiar with the new list that the EWG releases. Get to know their Dirty Dozen & Clean 15 produce lists. Then if you choose to shop at conventional supermarkets because the price is somewhat lower, then try to only put in your trolley or cart the Clean 15. These non- organic fruits & vegetables are the least likely to be contaminated by harmful sprays. 2017 Clean 15 non-organic list includes the thicker skinned produce like avocados, pineapples, cabbage, mangos, melons & citrus fruits. Then when you go to a whole foods market with nutritious & fresh produce you can choose to buy only the Dirty Dozen at these more expensive places. We really cannot afford in the long run to be buying the highly toxic Dirty Dozen at Conventional stores. Thin skinned foods like strawberries, peaches, nectarines & cucumbers are on the Dirty Dozen list. Even our dark leafy greens, such as spinach, was found to be sprayed heavily with pesticides from industrial farming methods.
You now have choices on this journey to eating more clean organic whole foods.

2. Make Salads & Vegetable Dishes The Star On Your Families Dinner Plates.
Most of the time vegetables are cheaper to buy than meat, especially if you are going to eat meat from beautiful clean organic sources (free of antibiotics & steroids). To make your salads more interesting & filling, consider adding properly prepared legumes & whole grains. Delve into lots of Salad & vegetable recipes so that these meals will be tasty & alluring to the eyes.

3. Buying Pre-Packed Foods From the Organic Whole foods Store Can Be Quite Expensive.
If your goal is to stay within your budget, then let’s be wise about some more decisions you can make when purchasing. Buying pre-packed lunches & salads from an organic store can be costly. A few extra minutes in the kitchen the night before, when you are making dinner for your family, can be well spent on preparing tomorrows lunches. You’ll have the added reward that you are helping your family financially & they will still be eating a higher quality of ingredients that you purchased from your big weekly shop.

4. Make Your Own Nutritious Breakfast.
Homemade healthy mueslis are so easy to make & are so much cheaper when you make them yourself. Cook & store large batches so your family can have these for breakfast & as a snack in the afternoon. To make this muesli into something extremely nourishing for your body, try adding to the pre-made batch each day a small amount of activated seeds, & sprouts. These are living super foods & can provide your family with extra enzymes, vitamins & minerals.

5. Buy In Bulk To Lower Your Costs.
Here on the Sunshine Coast we have easy access to wonderful Organic Bulk Foods shops where you can buy online or in store. Some of my favourites are The WholeFood Collective & The Source Bulk Foods Maroochydore. These Aussie businesses are run by amazing Mamas who totally understand that you want to be careful with your money, especially when trying to eat more cleanly. You can buy so many whole foods in bulk & then freeze them. I even prefer to buy legumes & beans in bulk rather than canned.

6. Grow Your Own Edible Garden.
Growing a garden with food potential is one of the most rewarding things you can do. Here’s some quick & easy produce that you can grow :-

* Start Sprouting!!! Sprouts contain an abundance of oxygen & have an alkalising affect on our digestive system. These enriched superfoods are jam packed with vitamins, minerals & enzymes that grow in a matter of days. Grow them on your kitchen bench & transfer them straight to your dinner plate when needed. They even contain essential fatty acids which help to balance our hormone levels. Woohoo, isn’t that amazing!

* Lettuce can be planted for a quick crop of salad leaves. No need to wait till they become full sized, you can start eating them by picking the outside leaves. The inner untouched leaves will then take about 6 weeks.

* Asian Green grow in a flash as well. Chinese cabbage like pak choy can be planted now for a fast harvest.

*Peas are great to grow in cooler months. Snow peas in particular are a fast crop to plant. You just need some chicken wire or some stakes for them to grow on. Try planting these along with sugar snap peas every couple of weeks during autumn for continuous picking.

*Rocket shoots up very quickly. This peppery dark leafy green plant is such a yummy addition to salads.
